- Description
- 'Locomotive 683 heads a royal train carrying the Duke and Duchess of York, as it leaves Field on October 4, 1901. Four pusher locomotives (two more than usual) have been assigned to the ten car train, perhaps indicating that the CPR did not wish the future King George to come to grief on the Big Hill. The photograph was taken by renowned mountaineer Edward Whymper.Pole, p. 45.: (1995), The Spiral Tunnels and the Big Hill, Altitude Publishing Canada Ltd., Canmore, Alberta
