- Description
- Japanese immigrants made up an large part of the Southlands community from the late 19th to the mid 20th Century, attracted by the opportunity to work at the Celtic Cannery. Terry Slack, long time Dunbar-Southlands resident, relates a story he heard from members of the McCleery family (original white settlers in the Dunbar Southlands area) that sheds light on why the Celtic Cannery (pronounced with a soft "C") may have changed its name from Keltic Cannery. Note: the story of the Cannery is unverified.
