- Soap opera heartthrob, Jack Wagner, from 'General Hospital' (Frisco Jones), 'Bold and the Beautiful' (Dominick Payne), and 'Melrose Place' (Dr. Peter Burns). He also had a hit song in 1985 - 'All I Need'. He was in town November 2015 filming a TV series called 'When Calls the Heart'. I saw him walking in downtown Vancouver on his day off. While he looked familiar, our conversation got off to an awkward start, as someone told me that he was somebody else. After the initial mistaken identity, I was thrilled when I realized who he was, as I was a big fan of 'General Hospital' and 'Melrose Place' during the years he was on those shows.

- Back in April, I met my all-time favourite actor, Johnny Depp. I made it my goal to hopefully get a picture with him for the period he was here filming 'Pirates of the Caribbean 5'. I scoured social media for sightings or autograph hounds in search of information. No one really seemed interested in tracking him down. The few bits that emerged came from dinner outings, a shopping excursion and a visit to the dentist! I knew where filming was occurring in North Vancouver but it was beginning to feel like it was not going to happen. The last day of a mini-staycation I finally decided I would go to the set and just take a chance. As luck would have it, an amazing opportunity came that day. I received a message from a very reliable source that Johnny would be filming at a local studio downtown. 5 minutes after that message, another came: FYI don't tell anyone what I just told, people in building have to sign non-disclosure agreements! Not that I was going to tell anyone, but that sealed it. I went to the location and waited about 7 hours. Sounds extreme but not for me. My hobby is meeting musicians that mean something to me so I know the deal. Put in the time, usually reap the benefit! I chatted with some of the crew who slyly teased me "What are you doing here...who do you think is here...etc..." They hinted my time would be rewarded but I didn't put much faith in them...wrong on my part. I forgot to mention that I actually arrived at the studio when Johnny's car brought him in. He was quickly whisked inside. All that mattered to me was he was inside which meant he had to come out at some point. Every now and again I would check Twitter to see if maybe anyone was talking about Johnny or trying to see where filming was. Nothing. Everyone was focused on 'Once Upon A Time' or 'Arrow'! It's nearing 8:30 and crew had said filming would wrap by then. One even asked my name and said he would pass it along to Johnny. OK... sure. Just before 9pm my patience paid off. A quick nod from a crew member to ready myself and out walked Johnny Depp. I thought... who am I kidding... I wasn't thinking anymore. Johnny walks up and says "Hi Jennifer, I hear you have been waiting for me." I mutter a hello and ask if I could get a quick picture. After a hug, we take a few selfies, Johnny directing me to a better lighting angle. His security, who never leave his side, left us to talk. I guess my lack of freaking out put him at ease or maybe it was Johnny's interest in talking to me. We talked about his band, Hollywood Vampires, my longtime appreciation of his work, the seniors Johnny Depp fan club my mom sort of has back home on Quesnel with her friends and a bit more on music and wine. Hugs, photos and a personal autograph on an Edward Scissorhands postcard I love. All told I probably had 7-10 minutes with him, and I will never ever forget it. A genuine, kind, down to earth and borderline shy person - Johnny Depp is the best. No other will come close.

- Description
- In this episode, Vancouver Special investigates the Hollywood North film industry with a behind the scenes look at shooting The X-Files in 1998 with actor Bruce Harwood, best known as X-Files Lone Gunman John Fitzgerald Byers, and veteran location mangers Kirk Johns and Julie Bernard. CBC's Ian Hanomansing sets the scene for the year and VPL librarian Tim McMillan returns with some great reads you can find at your library. Vancouver actor Bruce Harwood is no stranger to the Vancouver film industry. He has appeared in numerous television series, including The Outer Limits, Stargate SG-1 and Supernatural. However, he probably is best known for his role as John Fitzgerald Byers in The X-Files television series. Veteran location manager Kirk Johns and Creative BC Manager of Production Services Julie Bernard have been a vital part of Vancouver's film industry for more than twenty years. They join us today to talk about filming The X-Files in Vancouver and why our city is such a hot spot for film and television productions. Over the past few decades hundreds of productions have been filmed in Vancouver. With its accessible and diverse landscapes, highly-skilled film crews and world-class talent, the city is a major player in the international film industry. However, it was shows like The X-Files that truly set the scene and established Hollywood North as an ideal film destination. One of the first big network hits to be filmed in Vancouver, the popular award-winning paranormal sci-fi series debuted in 1993. Soon after X-File film shoots began to pop up across the city. Unfortunately in 1998, fans and film crews were shocked and saddened to hear that the show – after filming for five seasons in Vancouver – was moving its production to Los Angeles. Though it was a definite blow to the city's fledgling film industry at the time, Hollywood North weathered the storm. Today, thanks to productions like The X-Files, Vancouver's film crews are known as some of the best in the world and the city has earned a reputation for its ability to become the perfect backdrop for countless movies and TV shows. The theme song is “North Wind” by Vancouver band Lakefield, from the album Sounds from the Treeline.

He was recently in town this spring/summer to film a new TV series called Dirk Gently, to air on BBC America. In late June, he was gracious enough to stop for a picture while on a break from filming an outdoor walking scene at Guelph Park in Vancouver's Mount Pleasant neighbourhood. There are few photos of him flashing his pearly whites, so I especially like this picture because of his winning smile!

He was recently in town this spring/summer to film a new TV series called 'Dirk Gently', to air on BBC America. In May, I caught up with him in downtown Vancouver shortly after his arrival and before filming got started. He was very polite, and signed a 'Lord of the Rings' DVD insert for my daughter. He seemed happy to be back in Vancouver - was last here around 14 years ago he said, so this wasn't his first time in our beautiful city.
